DRIVING GUIDE

A better first lap.

Start with a clear road and a car you can place. These are the default controls, the race flow, and the settings worth checking before you chase a faster time.

Start with a run you can learn from.

  1. Open the game and choose Play as guest or sign in. Google is optional. A registered account is useful if you want to recover a career on another device.
  2. Choose a route. The menu's route cards show the venue and setting. Select Practice this route to borrow all cars without career rewards, or Free test track to experiment at Velocity Test Park.
  3. For a career race, choose Race. In Your starting grid, select Solo for a time trial, or add one to three bots and choose Easy, Normal or Hard. Bots use your car and build with their own paint; contact is on.
  4. Follow the checkpoints in order. Watch the checkpoint counter and minimap. A shortcut that skips a checkpoint will not give you a valid finish.

Leave Random mode off for your first few runs so the car stays familiar. An easy first target is one clean finish. On the next run, concentrate on one corner instead of trying to change the whole lap.

If you leave the road

Use Reset car to return behind the last validated checkpoint. The default key is R. Find your direction on the minimap before accelerating again.

The default controls.

These are the keyboard defaults. Your current bindings are shown in Settings → Controls & binds, and the driving hints update when you change them.

Default keyboard inputs for ordinary driving
ActionInputWhen to use it
AccelerateW / ↑Build speed after the car is pointing toward the exit.
Brake / reverseS / ↓Slow before a corner; reverse at very low speed.
SteerA D / ← →Make small corrections rather than holding full steering everywhere.
Handbrake / driftHold SpaceDeliberately begin a slide.
NOS boostHold ShiftRequires a fitted NOS system and a room that permits boost.
Shift down / upQ / EChange gears when using manual transmission.
Auto / manualMSwitch transmission mode.
Reset carRReturn behind your last validated checkpoint.
NOS side purgeHold PRequires the dual side purge system; consumes NOS without thrust.
Hydraulic bounceHold HRequires fitted hydraulics and low speed.
Race menuEscOpen the race menu, or close radio controls first.

On touch devices, drag the steering control left or right and use GO, BRAKE and DRIFT. Gear, NOS, PURGE and HOP buttons appear when the build and transmission make them available. If an effect button is absent, check the fitted part and room rules.

Speed comes from a usable exit.

Brake while the car is still mostly straight, then turn toward the corner. If you repeatedly run wide, enter more slowly before adding power or changing the build. A short throttle release can be easier to control than a large steering correction.

Drift deliberately.

Overdrive's drift mode begins with the handbrake. Sharp steering or throttle alone does not trigger it. Hold the handbrake to initiate the slide, then release it so rear grip can recover progressively. Countersteer gently and reduce throttle if the car keeps rotating.

A slide can be fun without being the quickest line. Compare your checkpoint progress and finish time, not just the amount of smoke. This is an arcade handling model, not a tire, damage or real-world driving simulator.

Use NOS where you can use the speed.

Wait for a clear, visible straight and an aligned car. Boosting immediately before a tight turn can turn saved time into extra braking. The reserve refills for the next race; larger tanks and stronger jets have different duration and consumption effects.

Make the input match your device.

A standard gamepad uses the left stick to steer, right trigger to accelerate and left trigger to brake. A is handbrake, B is NOS, bumpers shift, Y resets, X changes transmission, and stick clicks trigger purge and hydraulics when fitted. Controller layouts can be changed in Controls & binds.

For a racing wheel, connect the device and press a hardware button so the browser can detect it. Open the Wheel tab, calibrate center, full left and full right, then learn the accelerator and brake in Controller binds. Separate USB pedals work when the browser exposes their device.

Check the live input meters before racing: released pedals should read released, and full pedal travel should reach full input. Adjust wheel deadzone, sensitivity and response curve to make steering predictable. Unknown wheel layouts do not assume pedal indexes.

Browser support matters

Wheels depend on the browser's Gamepad API and your installed driver or device mode. Overdrive does not install drivers or add force feedback. Bindings and calibration save on this browser and device, separately from a cloud career.

Keep the road smooth enough to read.

Settings includes Ultra Low, Low, Medium and High graphics. Start with Ultra Low on an older phone or laptop: it targets 30 FPS and caps rendering resolution. Low and Ultra Low skip cinematic post-processing. Changing graphics does not change the driving physics.

For another reduction in load, lower the resolution limit or select a 30 FPS frame limit. Adaptive resolution can vary render size when enabled. The 3D game still needs WebGL 2 and hardware acceleration; these written guides remain available if your device cannot run it.

Engine sound and radio have separate controls. A key press or other deliberate input may be needed to start browser audio. The instrumental radio stations are original game audio; optional YouTube playback depends on the video's embedding permissions and network access.

Keep the right career.

A new career offers one of three free starter cars and 6,000 CR. Career cars and parts use virtual credits, and eligible completed races can earn credits. Practice routes, the test track and unlock-all rooms do not award career cash or public leaderboard records.

Progress saves automatically when the account service is available. A Google career and a guest career are separate. Choose the intended sign-in when returning, and let the profile finish loading before changing accounts. Clearing browser data can lose access to an unlinked guest career. A registered account adds recovery across devices; an active race cannot be resumed from a cloud save.
